On Sunday, a private Cessna jet carrying four people including a member of a prominent Florida family, crashed into the mountains of Virginia after a supersonic pursuit by F-16 jets when it entered restricted airspace over Washington, D.C. The pursuit caused a sonic boom which resonated throughout the region. Federal authorities are conducting an investigation into the tragic incident.
Details of the Unfortunate Incident
John Rumpel, who runs the Florida-based company Encore Motors of Melbourne Inc., confirmed that his daughter, 2-year-old granddaughter, her nanny, and the pilot were aboard the plane when the crash occurred. According to him, they were returning to their home in East Hampton on Long Island after visiting his house in North Carolina. Barbara Rumpel, his wife and a National Rifle Association (NRA) executive committee member, revealed in a Facebook post that her daughter and granddaughter were among the victims. This tragedy follows the couple’s earlier loss of their 19-year-old daughter, Victoria, in a 1994 scuba-diving accident.
The Cessna Citation took off from Elizabethton, Tennessee, heading for Islip, New York. The aircraft then inexplicably turned around over Long Island and proceeded to fly directly over Washington, D.C., before crashing in the sparsely populated town of Montebello, Virginia, around 3 p.m. Flight tracking sites have reported a rapid spiraling descent, with the plane dropping at a rate of more than 30,000 feet per minute before crashing into St. Mary’s Wilderness.
Immediate Response to the Incident
The military scrambled a fighter jet in response to the Cessna entering the restricted airspace over Washington, D.C. This F-16 fighter jet caused a sonic boom that echoed across the capital region.
